I'm a little frustrated. I went to the gym today (LA Fitness) and worked out with a personal trainer. She really doesn't like Atkins says that if you aren't doing more than 50 carbs a day that you literally can't think properly and that being in ketosis produces an acid in your body that is really bad for you.... But I had a Doctor okay it! I told her that too. I also told her that I will be increasing my net carbs and have already started doing that by 5 this week and am adding different foods to my diet each week to make sure I don't react to them and said next week it's going to be nuts and I'm going to try the almond flour everyone is raving about!

Honestly, if your doc said OK and you feel good about it, do it! Forget the trainer, she is not you. Be your own health guru and thats it! It is easy to judge people when you are fit. I bet if she had 100 lbs to lose, she wouldnt be saying that to you. Sorry for messing in your journal :) I wish you success!

Well, she does have one point. If you work out heavy, your body does need a certain amount of carbs to replace it's glycogen stores and if you don't have enough it can effect you. But many people are on Atkins and do just fine. You know your body best and you can adjust your carb intake as you go.

Myree, that is simply not true about ketosis. She is talking about ketoacidosis, a completely different state, that is what happens to diabetics whose diabetes is not under control. If your persoanl trainer is no better informed than that, you should find a new one. The other term for ketosis is lipolysis. It is not the same thing as ketoacidosis. Hope this helps you Myree. As for needing more carbs if you work out, that isn't true either. Professional body builders yes, Atkins followers who are trying to get into shape by working out??? Nope, don't need more than 50 grams of carbs. I wuld tell you to listen to your Dr. He has more education than a personal trainer as far as what is best for the human body in terms of nutrition. Great job, though Myree joining a gym! Keep up the good work.

Ctlss is right. If you have any questions, feel free to post a question on www.atkins.com for the Atkins dietitian Colette...she can address any questions you have. ...It is very unfortunate, but 30+ years of dietary ignorance has gone into the medical and sports education field. I'm in the same situation with training for a 3-day/60 mile walk...everyone is pushing carbs on me...I just smile and say "my dietitian says...".
