Not been journaling for a few days because life just got too crazy. My 88-year old mother was taken into hospital by social services because her dementia has advanced to the stage where she's not coping well at home on her own. Very harrowing for everyone, especially her. I've spent the last 3 days clearing and cleaning her house, which was in a truly horrific state, although it looks now as though she may not be going home at all. She may have to go into 24-hour care which, being so fiercely independent, she's always dreaded.

Despite all this going on, I interviewed for a new faculty job on Friday and, even tho' I felt I had very little time to prepare, I got it! It's almost 2 hrs drive away so I'll have to weekly commute but it's also a challenging position that I'm delighted to have got.

My diet and exercise has definitely taken a back seat to all this. Still being attentive but the odd pudding/biscuit binge has crept in there too. Looking forward to getting out for a run tomorrow morning and a day or two's rest.

Congratulations on the new position. I'm sorry to hear about your mom.

Congratulations - a new job is always so exciting, isn't it? Is assisted living an option for your Mom - still have an apartment like setting but someone around to prepare meals and check on her daily?

Thanks, Bella, for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it looks like Mum's dementia has reached a stage where she'd be at too much risk with assisted living. Even if carers came in 3 times a day, there would be a lot of time left over for her to get into difficulties, like standing in the middle of the busy road outside her place and not realising that's where she is, before a car hits her. Physically, she's still very well and active but it's frontal lobe dementia, which affects judgment, reasoning and behaviour. Thankfully, because she has no assets to speak of, her care needs and costs will met 100% by the NHS. I don't think I've ever been quite so grateful to be in the UK...
