First attempt at making oat milk this morning. So cheap, so easy, and none of the unrecognizable ingredient in store bought. Don't know how it will taste yet.

The recipe was a little thin for my tastes. Next time I'm going to try using less water

We've never made oat milk but we used to make soy milk when our son was lactose intolerant. Way cheaper to make your own for sure. I loved saving money and getting a healthier product. Though now I really like a product called "Not Milk". It's made from a bunch of different plants like coconut, almond, oat, pea, cashew, etc, to taste more similar to real milk. They really nailed the mouth-feel of milk. Anyway have fun with the oatmilk! I'll have to try that some time.

I made a lot of soymilk when I was a broke ski bum, and then saved the cracked soybeans for soy burgers. Those, plus homemade bread, were our cheap as dirt staples. I might try soymilk again. I do want to try making some nut milks and see what I like best. I try to avoid processed foods, so I'm hoping to come up with something homemade that I like. I use it mostly for my morning oatmeal, anyway, so I'm not likely to be drinking it straight. I loved that the oat only took 5 minutes to make

I started making nut milk myself because my body is really intolerant of all the chemical stabilizers they put in the store bought stuff. I"ve been making a cashew/hazelnut milk that is soooo delicious. I'm trying to perfect the effort level now (straining through nut milk bags isn't that fun.) Thinking of buying a nut milk appliance, but might just try straining through a French press first.

I've got a bunch of oversized flour sack kitchen towels, so I'll try straining through one of those. Maybe if I get really into it, I might think about a nut bag, but I'll see if what I have works first. We shall see! 😁

We have enjoyed it when we've made it in the past. Hubby usually added one date to the mix, which we used for cereals and tea. Without a sweetener we also used it for baking and cooking like making vegan white sauce in veg lasagne. These days it just doesn't seem worth the hassle when the soya milk here in the UK is very cheap and it has protein and added b12 so makes more sense to use that. I still buy unsweetened oat milk for some cooking though. It is fun to experiment so enjoy! ☀️😊

Buenitabishop-- it seemed a little thin. Not sure if the recipe didn't call for enough oats for the amount of water, or if it's just that my blender isn't powerful enough to process it properly. I really need to get a better blender. I don't think I'd drink a glass straight up, but it works for what I need it for, which is soaking my oatmeal and as a smoothie liquid

Nikina -- I like soy milk, too, and I used to make it many years ago. I like the protein content on it. I might get back to it, but it's much more of a process than oat, and I wanted something quick and easy this time. Homemade doesn't have the b12, but I supplement that. The oat definitely has a milder flavor. I'll keep experimenting! 😁
