A funny thing happened at Starbucks earlier this week. I had been out all day and stopped at the mall to get lunch. I behaved myself and bought a small salad that I added a hard boiled egg, sunflower and pumpkin seeds to. I had brought the added items from home. I also had bought a small amount of chicken to add to the salad. No dressing because oops, forgot and no I didn't want what they offered. It was good but I was still hungry. I knew I should wait a bit but I desperately needed coffee so Starbucks it was.
I had also brought a small bag of almonds and a container of plain greek yogurt from home. BUT MAN those scones looked soooooo good. Along with the plain coffee I did buy a blueberry one, closing my eyes to the calories and sat down to eat. I broke off a corner of the scone and yes it was good.....just not as good as it was a month ago. Hmmmmm. I opened the yogurt and added a drop of honey I had asked the barista for and proceeded to drink my coffee, eat my yogurt and some of the almonds. I found myself only eating the yogurt and almonds. I was a little shocked by the time I had almost finished the yogurt and realized that I hadn't touched the scone again. In the past I would literally eat all of it including the crumbs. Did I take it home? Yes. After I got home it went into the trash which is what I should have done at the mall.
I know I haven't been able to eat sweets lately but this one really surprised me. Scones are sweet but not as much as other items. I'm in the habit of eating yogurt, fruit and nuts so I guess it kicked in. Does anyone else have this happen to them?

Definitely. A lot of my "favorites" are no longer a favorite (and it doesn't feel like it's taken that long to feel that way). When I taste something from the past I can leave it at a taste because it just doesn't measure up to the anticipation. Some of the most processed stuff actually smells chemically to me and I can't even bear the thought of eating it. Happened with a glazed doughnut...I didn't even like the soft, greasy way it felt in my mouth. Didn't swallow and trashed the rest. Haven't had any in probably a year! Made a cake myself from an old recipe and it tasted oily to me (with only 1/2 cup oil)! I'm used to splitting the oil with applesauce and forgot. Went back to update my recipe immediately because even my Christmas cheats have come a MIGHTY long way.

It's bizarre isn't it? My husband brought a sweet-type bread home and put it into the bread cupboard. I still can't get the smell out. I suppose I'll have to put baking soda in there. :)

Bizarre. To be honest, it some ways I've been sad about it (LOL)! It was like losing a friend. So I really did make new friends like homemade frozen yogurt because the "off" taste of my old friends wasn't worth the effort and the empty kcals. Went to the bakery today - no sugar no preservative whole wheat bread - and left their decadent brownies and cinnamon roll bread. A first!! The thought of the sticky sugar gave me an instant headache when I thought my last one about a month ago (HaHa)!

Tonight we had homemade carrot cake in honor of my husband's birthday. I find I have not yet lost my taste for sweet things. I envy the ease with which you were able to stop eating your scone.

YUP!! I actually used to love twinkies, one of the few processed foods that is a treat. Someone left some in the break room on the counter that is free for the taking. Had one bite, it went into the trash at my desk, all I could taste was the chemicals! No more twinkies for me unless I make them.

Yes - I just feel lousy after some old favorites, It is because real food nourishes us and we fee satiated - the other food leaves us cold.

I think it helped that I took almost everything that was a processed sweet out of my fridge, freezer and pantry. If it wasn't where I could get it when I did have a craving for something "sweet" I had to get a piece of fruit or something similar. And yes LuC2 it is a bit like losing a friend. I used to really like the jello brand chocolate pudding cups. No more...Yuck. The same goes for York brand peppermint patties. Sigh. izzypup68 homemade carrot cake....Yummmm I might have a problem turning that down! Lol! I might be tempted by the cake but I've never cared much for icing so if it was on there I'd end up taking it off. I don't know why this is happening. It's great don't get me wrong... but I have lost weight before and I never remember losing my taste for certain things as much as I have this time. wholefoodnut- twinkies were never a fav for me! Gingersnaps however I pretty much adored. I've got a bag and a half in my pantry and haven't touched them in 3 months. I suppose they should go. Maybe its the non-fresh taste as well as the chemicals. No problem at all with fruit a few times a day in various forms. Hmmmm now I'm afraid to make anything sweet. :) HCB- I'm definitely beginning to agree with you. Going out to eat is going to be a pain though. I've already turned into one of those "What is in it? How is it cooked?" type of people. :)

Me too! I read labels like a religion! I try to calm down a little in restaurants and go in understanding that this is not going to be optimum but I will control the things I can for this "treat." And I used to L-O-V-E chocoalate jello pudding cups and yes, had my last one many, many months ago. Had a weird, metallic aftertaste to me. I've never experienced this before either (or maybe just didn't listen to the queues from my body). But I will also say that I've never 'dieted' on just whole foods without a lot of processed additions or low-fat/non-fat that makes up for the lack of taste with something else. Most of my menu is 'clean' and I think that is what has changed my palate to pick up on the weird, little chemically tastes. I've been quite amazed by it all and it just makes me want to rush out and try something else! (Bought fennel last weekend...never had prepared it before).
