Well, got some good news and some bad news today re: my husband's fasting results. Good news, heart looks good on the nuclear exam. Bad news is he is now Diabetic type II. WOW. This will be a struggle, as he seems to think pills fix everything. He will definitely need to adjust a few things in his diet and get up off the couch. I will be there to help and support but I will not babysit. There is still too much life for me to live. I want to live it with him, so he needs to take responsibility for his own self, and get moving and making better choices when it comes to eating. I guess it will depend on how much he wants to stay with us, amongst the living. I hope this scares him, like the scare he had to quit smoking! Pray for me!!

My dad is 72, is very obese (around 300lbs/used to be 320) and has had Type 2 for over a decade. He manages it with diet alone. He refuses to take a pill or stick needles in himself. He basically is gluten free/sugar free (though he cheats a lot with the occasional bowl of ice cream, or cup of Dr. Pepper). He eats high protein, which I don't recommend unless you are being watched by a doctor (will lead to liver failure if you overdo it). He can't drive, so if he wants something unrelated to my taking him to the grocery store- he walks to it, or rides the bus (which evokes more walking). He recently got a physical and they said he he healthier now than he was 5 year ago. He always believed he'd be dead at 55 so imagine his suprise that he's still kicking without the assistance of anyone at 72. I've noticed lately I don't handle sugar as well as I used to, so I try to cut out as much as I can remember to (huge reason for a diet). I read somewhere about a crash diet that will elimate Type 2 if you catch it early enough, but it's severe. I'd bring that up to a doctor as well, it could be worthwhile.

Thanks for the advice Quirky, since I have started my weight management he has been watching (downsizing) his suppers. We still need to attend the education classes for the diabetes, but I know it will be a bit of a challenge since like I said earlier, he thinks pill cure all. He definitely needs to get moving and I know myself that sitting on the couch with some chips and dip is much easier, but such is life. We are both getting to the age where the weight is becoming an issue, so something needs to be done. It's hard, hard work though. I believe we can do it!!!
