Diario de writingwyo, 16 sep. 23

The pile of front yard apples keeps growing. I think this is most of them. Today's project: apple butter. Have a few food switches figured out to decrease my protein, per doctor's orders. Funny to have to reverse course on that front

That's spot of apples! My doctor has told me I sorry too much about protein and 40 grams is enough. I still aim for 60. I remember him saying it would be different if I had to go out and cut down trees. At my last appointment he did recommend that I do some work with weights to keep my muscles strong.

I am so glad I am not protein restricted as I am carb restricted.

For most people, Morticia, extra protein is no problem. Carb restriction works for a lot of people, both for weight and health. In fact, the DIETFITS study pitted low carb and low fat head to head, and there wasn't a hill of beans difference between weight loss results.

Fritzy -- for funsies, look up one of Christopher Gardner's rants about protein on YouTube. He's really funny. He's a Stanford nutrition researcher who thinks Americans are way too obsessed with it. I wasn't even getting that much by most people's standards, but clearly it was too much for me

MattRide, hope you like tofu, tempeh, and seitan if you want my proteins. Meat (other than fish) isn't on the menu here 🤣

Adiposeman -- I just put 4 pounds worth of apples in the oven to attempt to make apple butter. Never tried making it before. It barely made a dent in the pile 🍏🍏🍏

If you have a pressure cooker or instant pot, it’s much quicker.

Thanks, Katsolo! I have an old pressure cooker, so may try that next time. Do you have a recipe you use that you could share? I don't own an Instant Pot

I do. Let me see if I can find the book. It’s for the instant pot, but that’s just an electric pressure cooker, so should translate.

Hmmmm...I think I would make apple compote. Top oatmeal or baked sweet potato with it. Had tempeh the other day (Guinee pig for my BFF's son, who is a budding chef). Nice boost of protein, though the texture is a bit unusual. Why does your doc think your protein is too high? Is it really about protein, or is it the saturated fat and sodium?

Apple compote sounds great, JB. May have to try that. It's not like I'm running out of apples. The four pounds I'm trying to turn into apple butter barely made a dent in the pile. As for the protein, a few reasons on that. First off, I've seen this movie before when I was more omnivorous -- higher protein intake would equal wonky kidney results. My protein numbers were also off on the blood panel. The animal foods were still pretty minimal, as I was managing most of the increase with plant protein, so my saturated fat was still low. Didn't make any changes to sodium, at least not intentionally, but I'll be more cognizant of it moving forward. Really, the single biggest change I made was increasing protein amount
