4th ski outing: 3 hours, 6.5 miles. Technique is improving and I'm beginning to make telemark turns. Still wearing the too-big ski pants I have to hold up with belted cargo shorts because I haven't found a better pair. Up to 20.5 miles this season

Hi writingwyo! Looking good! What a fun way to burn what must be a massive amount of calories!

Thanks, Morticia! Agnes -- it does burn a lot, but it's probably a wash once you factor in the trail mix 😂 For us, it's mostly an excuse to be out in the woods. It's a workout, but it doesn't feel like exercise

Give it a go, unity! Classic style is easier to begin with than skate skiing, IMO, if you want to try it. Do you downhill ski?

Writingwyo, ha ha I once went cross country skiing when I was a teenager and I fell so many times that the next day, I could not sit down. 🤣 so, no, I've not really explored skiing. But the idea appeals to me. It seems founded on methodical rhythm. I imagine it can conjure up a calm inner state of being like so many quiet, methodical activities do for me. Even washing dishes can be like that at times. 😂 just in the zone...

I was born raised and educated in the frozen tundra. A.K.A. Minnesota. Downhill skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling…but cross country I could never do. We had to once or twice in high school gym and I failed it just felt to awkward for me. Since moving to the south East I have no tolerance for cold. Once in my mid thirties I got the most expensive Nordic Trac money could buy or my then fiancée spent. I used it maybe 50 times and it found its way to being collapsed at the bottom of a closet. At that time I was fit and healthy and a regular gym rat. I was all about weight machines and not cardio. When I moved years later took it with me. Set it up again in a spare room…never used it and it found its way into the closet. I went to one of those sports stores that sell used equipment but the showroom was full of ski machines. So I dismantled it and sent it to the landfill. Not long ago I was thinking I wish I still had it… lol. But it’s been gone about 10+ years now. I think it’s one of the best types of exercise but not for me.

This is so gorgeous. I honestly would like to cross country ski , but no snow yet. I absolutely loved it when I tried it. I also did snow shoes. Loved those as well. Since Iam not traveling anywhere just yet, I have to wait for winter. Is it necessary to get the cross country skis or can you use regular skis because I know the cross country skis they allowed to shoot to pop up when you using them but can you use regular skis as well do you know?

unity - it really IS quite meditative. I get out there, and there's really nothing but the forest and the feeling of trying to get the movement right. I'd really encourage you to try it. ddrudd -- thanks! honeebuns -- I think I feel the same way about going to the gym and lifting weights that you feel about cross country skiing. It's great exercise, but not for me. I do have a ski machine, but I don't use it much. ocean_girl -- you really do need cross country skis to do this. Not only do you have the free heel on the binding, they also typically have a gripper section in the middle to help you go uphill more easily. They also have more of a camber than downhill skis -- those are flatter. My husband has mounted old downhill skis with x-c bindings and skied on them, as he's a strong enough skier he can go uphill without the gripper section, but having the right bindings is critical.
