Not that I'm planning on working out today, but I have a question. I've seen the advice that if a cold stays "above the neck," it's OK to work out. Do people seriously get colds that stay above the neck?? I don't think I've ever had a cold stay above the neck in 50+ years of living. The one I have now began with full body aches and a burning sensation under my breastbone for its opening salvo. I'm in no shape to do anything but lie flat. Good news is I've tested more than once for covid and gotten negatives

I don’t get that either. And usually If I’m sick, I’m not doing anything til I get better. Hope you feel better soon

Huberman just did two hours on cold and flu symptoms and treatment last week. I’ll defer to him. I always try to work out, but I’m an idiot with large dogs.

My hubs theory is to sweat out the illness so he will run or do the stairmaster till he works up a good sweat. Seems to work for him. Rarely does he get sick but when he does he recovers faster than anyone ive ever known.

Hit the gym and spread the love…. No seriously, rest up, I’ve always felt a cold is your body yelling at you to take a break.

It sounds more like flu than a cold. A couple of weeks ago, I had flu. I couldn't muster a full workout, so I just did my stretches and a few mobility/bodyweight exercises (very light) to keep from losing progress. It was over a week before I could manage a complete workout. Feel better!!!

I'd say if you feel up to it, then you can work out.

Gigi-- I'm not kidding when I say that every cold I get affects me like this, so I don't think it's flu. Plus, I did get my flu shot.

Katsolo -- thanks for pointing me to the Huberman podcast on the subject. I kind of drifted in and out trying to watch it, but I learned some things that might be helpful next time I travel

YOH -- my experience is exactly the opposite. If I feel like I'm fighting something and do so much as walk around the block, I'm in for it. Back in 2016 I made that mistake when I was at a conference. By the time I got home (5 hour drive in a snowstorm), I was so sick that I literally didn't have the energy to watch television 😂

Thanks, all 😊 I think more than anything, I'm bewildered by the concept that people get colds mild enough that they even CAN go work out. It's just not my experience, and it makes me wonder if I'm just a wimp. This morning, I don't have as much uncontrolled coughing, but my throat hurts so badly I don't want to talk or swallow.

heh, if I'm not running a fever and I don't feel excessively tired I'll work out while I'm sick. I do a lot of HR training though, so if I really shouldn't be exercising I see it spike very quickly. I hope you feel better soon!

My unscientific approach is that unless I’m so fatigued I can’t move, which does happen from time to time, I push in order to raise my body temp so it can fight. Now, when I’ve had a bad case of the flu, it’s my normal to sleep for a solid day or two. Freaked BF out first time i did it. I just disappeared and slept for two days and was fine after that. Coughs are the thing that stays with me, but i try not to let them keep me down.

Thanks, redrose. Soon! 😃 Katsolo -- I know that strategy works for a lot of people, but wow, did it ever backfire on me the times I tried it. Nine times out of 10, if I catch on I'm flirting with a cold early enough, I can shake it, but for me it takes absolute rest, zinc, vitamin c and a lot of simple carbs. This one I didn't catch early enough. Caloric restriction and exercise when I'm under the weather make it so, so much worse

Good news! The throat is better and I got my first decent night's sleep all week. Yesterday, I was half-convinced I had strep, it was so bad. I've gone from flat on the couch to seated on the couch. Progress! 🤣
