Another half marathon is in the books! I had the privilege of running this past weekend. If you follow my food diary you will see that my intake was all over the place and some days I just didn't get around to logging. Fortunately that carb and fat loading didn't lead to any weight gain. Of course, there wasn't much of a loss either. The race start time was delayed almost two hours by the time I crossed the start line due to weather and I we were soaked by the rain during the first four miles which basically washed off all my body glide and led to some ugly sports bra chafing. I was pretty happy with my time at the 10K mark. Then, the sun and humidity set in between mile 8 and 9. By mile 10 I had a relentless cramp in my left hip flexor which unfortunately left me walking the remainder of the race with exception to the last half mile. My time/pace was awful, but I finished it even if I nearly felt like crawling. My biggest mistakes were not fueling properly and not wearing waterproof sunscreen. I didn't eat before the race at all because I figured that with a 730am start I would be finished by 1130 and have become somewhat accustomed to not eating until noon anyway. I was hoping to tap into my fat reserves for fuel, especially since I have plenty in reserve. Great idea, except electrolyte depletion can really mess you up. Add to that not getting across the start line due to weather delays for an extra 2 hours and it was a recipe for disaster. I saw two other runners drop during the race due to heat exhaustion and one after the finish line apparently had a heart attack. It definitely was not as well-organized this year as in the past. I had considered doing the full marathon with this particular race, but am relieved that I stuck with the half. I think the next full marathon I do will be one where I know there are plenty of water and aid stations. I felt awful for those who did the full marathon this year, particularly the back of the pack runners like myself. By the time we were coming through, many of the water and aid stations were closed and police were reopening the roads for vehicle traffic. I'm not one to complain as I think it is a blessing to wake up able to run. But, it was definitely one of the more difficult races I've entered...partially due to things beyond any race organizers control like down pours followed by 87 degree with high humidity. In the future, I am wearing waterproof sunscreen. I'm a bit toasted and I can't outrun skin cancer anymore than I can outrun a bad diet.

All that being said, while my time was crap I am happy with myself for finishing among other things. This is the heaviest weight I've ever been while running a half. There was another back of the pack runner who came over and sat down when I took a break to try to stretch out my hip flexor unsuccessfully. It was her first half marathon and she told me that she was going to quit. Around that time the sweep bus came up near us and offered to ride us back to the finish line. I quickly told her that I would stay with her until she finished no matter how slow she went but that if she got on that bus and threw away the ten miles she had already done instead of finishing the remaining 5K then she would regret it. She agreed not to quit. Well, until mile 11 and then I think she developed some new choice names for me as she reconsidered finding a sweep bus. But when we crossed the finish line I didn't even look at the time. I knew it was pathetic, but it felt so good to help get this lady persevere to the end. Later that night, my husband was kind enough to massage the soreness from my hip. All I could think to myself was "You're only going to get better." I feel accomplished...even if it was slow and ugly. I completed it packing around a lot of extra weight that is going to be going soon enough. The hope is to be down to my last weigh in weight by August 17th (my little one's 2nd birthday). It has taken me longer to drop weight post-pregnancy than most I suspect. But, it will be done.

I leave for vacation Wednesday evening so I won't be tracking again until May 16th...in part because I'm too cheap to pay roaming charges. I do expect a weight gain from vacation. I don't plan to throw caution to the wind and I will still be training as I have some other shorter races coming up as soon as I return from vacation. But, I am going to relax a little and enjoy vacation. I rarely drink alcohol, but I absolutely intend to do so. It may balance out with being able to have more time to exercise since I'm not at work...or it may not. In either event, I am looking forward to this time with my husband. Will keep food diary updated through Wednesday.

OMG! A heart attack!!!! That's horrid... and while weather is considered an act of God I DO hope they plan better next time... esp the road closures, your safety, etc., Now, enough about that... WELL DONE YOU not only for finishing despite all of the challenges but for helping the other person finish. She may have called you names (( and very impressive you endured that)) but you know in your heart she had to go to bed that night with a lot more pride than she'd have felt if she'd quit. Very inspirational.
