Huzzah! The weight is starting to come off again. I had started to think that I was going to be stuck at 230 for the foreseeable future.

So, I hit a new low for Valentine's Day, which is pretty good, I suppose. I have mixed feelings about this holiday. On one hand, I hate the commercialism of it all, with the crowds, price hikes, and standardized gifts (surprise, I got you flowers and chocolate on the same day that all your girl friends also got flowers and chocolate from their guy). On the other hand, this is all stuff that we should be doing year-round, but seems to get neglected when life gets in the way. Most guys I know only get their wife or GF flowers once a year, unless they screwed something up. That's kind of sad, but I'm just as guilty as anyone. If we could spread the "Valentine-ness" over the whole year, maybe we wouldn't need a single commercialized day. I think I need to work on that a little.

So, happy Valentine's day. I hope you all enjoy the day, and take some time for yourselves and your significant other. And, if you happen to be single today, just be happy for all the money you're saving, and try not to feel pressured into an awkward V-day hookup.

In other news, I recently bought a 95% pure stevia extract from Amazon, in the hope that I could use it in my coffee instead of splenda, which has about 0.9g of carbs per packet. I tried it out a couple of times, and it turns out that pure stevia is very sweet, yet also somehow very bitter. It almost tastes like a chemical sweetener. It is certainly not a replacement for sugar, as the manufacturers would have you believe. It's possible that I might be using too much, which is causing the bitter aftertaste; the stuff is like 1000 times sweeter than sugar, after all. I might try to experiment with it some more. If this doesn't work out, I might try some liquid sucralose or something like that. We'll see how it goes.

I also picked up some 0-carb whey protein isolate from GNC. The stuff costs about $28 for 7 servings, which sounds a little ridiculous. But, so far, it is the most protein-dense "food" I have been able to find. It has 50g of protein, 1g of fat, and 0 carbs per serving. It mixes up like a milkshake, sort of. It doesn't taste all that great, but it's not awful. I mixed it with coffee instead of water, and it was absolutely tolerable. If it helps me keep muscle while I am losing weight, I'm willing to stick with it. It was also very filling; after I drank it, I was too full to eat a real dinner. So, while $4 per milkshake may sound like a lot, it basically replaced a meal.

It's fun to experiment with new foods isn't it? Good luck with both the whey and the stevia. Keep us posted. :) And I love your entry about Valentine's Day. I hope you can spread the cheer of it across the year. Happy Wednesday!
