"The secret to change is to focus all your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new." I can't remember where i read this, but i'd written it in my notebook recently (I use the one on my phone regularly to remember what this aging brain may not!) as its seemed to really ring true for me of late. As many of you know, I've struggled with healthy eating on weekends & when traveling. It seemed that even though I focused on it more than ever & tried to white knuckle my way through, the struggle continued. So, I decided to change my approach, look at each weekend and trip as an opportunity to make progress (without aiming for perfection) and stay curious about when/why/what I wanted to eat. And while perfect it's not been, progress is happening & I'm working on turning these new actions into habits.
I re-read Chapter 3 from the mindful eating retreat materials yesterday (Bella & I are doing so together in a group we both belong to called "Compulsive Eating, Overeating & Eating Disorders". Please join us if you are interested, and if you can't join the group, PM me. It used to be a closed group & I'm not sure if the administrators are still active here). The material reminded me that "habits are like deep ruts in a road; you have to turn the steering wheel hard & give the car some gas to pull ourselves out". I'm feeling good that I've got that wheel turned & am working to keep giving it the gas it needs to get me out of the rut of weekend & trip overeating. I know I have the tools now to do so & the support here to help with a push from a friend if needed!
Today, in addition to celebrating the women winning too (a UConn basketball monopoly), I'm off to workout (strength training followed by zumba) and have a mani/pedi this afternoon -- just what the dr ordered as I'm feeling bit of the post-wonderful weekend let down. So, I'll start in prayer (which never lets me down) --
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen.
And, I'll pray, breathe, log, journal & express my way through this one day and each one meal, moment, bite, thought & emotion. I'm so, so very grateful for each of amazing you, my family & IRL friends, hot bulletproof coffee, warming temps & no more rain, mani/pedis, and having the health & wealth to live this life I love! xoxox
