You don't need a tape measure. Just use a piece of string, or ribbon, a piece of cloth or a belt. All you need is something flexible to go round you, and non elastic so the length is constant.
Mark your measure on it, or use it to mark somewhere else, like a wall, just like you did with your son as he was growing. Keep a note in your diary or journal if you want.
You will see if you are shrinking or growing, you don't need to know the number.
