Hydrotherapy Benefits and Notes

I love water and finding out new benefits of both hot and cold, and different techniques. Thought I would also look it up for any weight loss benefits and notes on overall, general health.

THIS IS COVERING COLD WATER ONLY - It is not safe or healthy to send your body into shock by plunging immediately into cold water if you are already overheated, hot, or heated up. In those cases it is better to get used to lukewarm water first. Cold water is good for the circulatory system and the heart if not taken in a way that overly shocks the body. "Cold shock" speeds up the heart rate too quickly, too much, which can lead to hyperventilation or heart attacks. - https://www.heart.co.uk/southcoast/news/local/heart-attack-warning-over-cold-water/

Cold and the Stimulation of "Brown Fat" for Weight Loss

Cold is one of the only stimulations of brown fat (the majority of the body fat is white, which resources itself for mainly energy storage. Obesity can lead to less brown fat storage. The main function of brown fat is to maintain body heat during cold exposure. "However, more recent evidence suggests that its expression in adults is far more common than previously thought, with a higher likelihood of detection in women and leaner individuals.

Making yourself cold is supposed to “activate” BAT, which in turn generates heat, raises your metabolism and burns off regular fat. The idea is that you take a cold shower for at least 30 seconds and let it run over your shoulders, neck and back. Research shows that this is the area where a lot of brown fat is found. Brown fat's calorie-burning effect has been shown to vary among individuals. In general, people who are obese seem to have less active brown fat than normal-weight people - https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/6-unusual-ways-to-burn-calories#section1

Human studies indicate that exposure to cold temperatures may significantly increase calorie burning, depending on the amount of active brown fat in your body.

A 2009 study found that exposure to extreme cold temperatures activated brown fat in 23 and 24 participants by a 15-fold increase, meaning someone could lose up to nine pounds in a year if they kept this practice up. - https://www.medicaldaily.com/benefits-cold-showers-7-reasons-why-taking-cool-showers-good-your-health-289524

On Drinking Cold Water --

Drinking water has also been shown to temporarily boost metabolism in normal and overweight adults and children. Some studies even suggest that you may be able to maximize this effect by drinking cold water

Other Benefits with Cold Water/ Cold Showers --

Cold shorts increase the overall oxygen intake of the body temporarily, increasing the heartrate and releasing a rush of blood through the body. It gives a dose of energy and aids in alertness. Good to do in the morning or when energy is lagging. Katherine Hepburn, a Hollywood actress, was a fan of cold showers. She began taking them daily after being pushed by Dr. Thomas Norval Hepburn, a urologist and pioneer in social hygiene, The New York Times reported. Katherine would take ice-cold baths or showers during childhood and for the rest of her life — she would advise others to do so as well. The actress swore by cold showers, and had a high energy level to support her claims. - https://www.medicaldaily.com/benefits-cold-showers-7-reasons-why-taking-cool-showers-good-your-health-289524

Cold water helps tighten pores in the skin and cuticles in the hair, so even after a hot shower, it's a good idea to follow with cool or cold rinse-off.
Sealing the skin this way helps prevent clog, dirt getting in to lead to break-outs, but also can prevent it from stripping it of its healthy natural oils too quickly. It does NOT shrink pores, and the tightening effect on the skin is temporary. By flattening hair follicles, cold showers can help the hair with shine and strength in strand durability.

Cold Water is excellent for the immune system.
Cold Water immersion causes your lymph vessels to contract, forcing your lymphatic system to pump lymph fluids throughout the body and speed up the flushing of waste out of the area. This in effect helps the immune system.

If done on a regular basis, it can prompt long-lasting changes in the lymphatic and circulatory system that work for the body's benefit.

Speeds up Muscle Soreness and Recovery

Athletes commonly take ice baths to reduce muscle soreness, but a quick cold shower after exercising or the gym can do wonders for relieving delayed-onset muscle soreness.

Eases Stress and anxiety, cools off anger/frustration, Helps Depression

Cold water sends a large amount of electrical impulses from the peripheral nerve endings to the brain, which helps create an antidepressant effect, boosts mood, and has a mild analgesic effect with pain relief.
